1 year post doc position available at FoundLaw in Helsinki

In 2013-2018 the Network hosts “Reinventing the Foundations of European Legal Culture 1934-1964”, a research project funded by the ERC Starting Grant and led by Kaius Tuori. The research project focuses on the history of European legal thinking and the significance given to Roman law in the generation of a shared European legal identity (foundlaw.org).

The research project “Reinventing the Foundations of European Legal Culture 1934-1964” in the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

for a fixed term of one year, commencing 1 August 2015 or as agreed.

The aim of the postdoctoral researcher position is to encourage a talented, recently graduated holder of a doctoral degree to seek further qualifications and become an independent professional researcher.

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, the appointee must hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scientific work as well as the teaching skills required by the position. In the project, the task of the appointee would be to conduct a study exploring the narratives arising from different strands of European thought on law, tradition and history. Such a study may concentrate on the history of law, jurisprudence, Roman law, intellectual history, the history of totalitarianism of the 20th century and other relevant themes.

The background of the postdoctoral researcher may be in law, history, the social sciences (e.g. political studies or anthropology), or another applicable field. The project explores subjects such as the spread of influences in the history of science and its bibliometric study, as well as the impact of totalitarianism and refugees on research, identity formation and changes in the concept of the rule of law. Due to the broad scope of the themes in the project, its researchers must exercise creative and multidisciplinary thinking.

In addition to teaching and participation in administrative duties the Faculty assigns to teachers, the duties of the postdoctoral researcher include research related to the theme of the project. Research is conducted as a part of a team, and postdoctoral researchers will also supervise the work of doctoral students along with the head of the research project. The work involves research in libraries and archives outside Finland.

The applicant’s doctoral degree is expected to have been granted no more than four years prior to the application deadline. For exceptional reasons which must be stated in the application, an applicant who completed his or her doctoral degree more than four years ago may be considered.
